The Law is Called…

To better understand the meaning of the "Law" and how Christians are to relate to its effects in our lives, I have listed 19 places in the Bible where the Law is referred to things such as "Powerless, Weak and even a Dead Husband". As you consider these verses, the meaning of the finished work of Christ will come alive. Many Christians fail to understand how wonderful the love of God really is in our lives. Not until we die to the power of the law, to please God, will we be able to walk in faith.

Acts 13:39 Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses.

Acts 18:13 "This man," they charged, "is persuading the people to worship God in ways contrary to the law."

It Is Called A Yoke Of Slavery -
(Gal. 5:1-5) “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. 2 Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. 3 Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. 4 You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. 5 But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope.”

It Is Called Against Us And Contrary -
(Col. 2:13-15) “And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross: And, having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.”

It Is Called Weak because of the flesh –
(Rom. 8:4-5) “For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh; that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

It Is Called A Dead Husband – released from the law
(Rom. 7:1-4) 1 Do you not know, brothers-- for I am speaking to men who know the law-- that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives? 2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage. 3 So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man. 4 So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.

It Is Called A Thing That Bound Us -
(Rom 7:5-6) For when we were controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death. 6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.

It Is Called Powerless –
(Romans 8:3) For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man,

It Is Called A Jail –
(Ga 3:23) Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed.

It Is Called The Power Of Sin -
15:56) The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

It is Called A Curse -
(Gal 3:13) Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."

It Is Called Weak And Useless -
(Heb 7:18-19) The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God. The KJV calls the law a CARNAL commandment. 16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment

It Is Called A Ministry That Condemns -
(2Cor 3:9) If the ministry that condemns men is glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! 10 For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory.

It Is Called “Cancelled” –
(Col 2:14) having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.

It Is Called “Obsolete” -
(Hebrews 8:13) 13 By calling this covenant "new," he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear.

It is Called a "Shadow" not the realities -
(Hebrews 10:1) 1 The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming-- not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. 2 If it could, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. (Heb 10:10) FOR SINCE the Law has merely a rude outline (foreshadowing) of the good things to come--instead of fully expressing those things--it can never by offering the same sacrifices continually year after year make perfect those who approach [its altars]. (AMP)

It is called a "Reminder of Sins" -
(Hebrews 10:3) 3 But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins, 4 because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

It is called something that "arouses sin in us"
(Romans 7:5) For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death.

It is called a "School-Master"
(Galatians 3:24) Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come we are no longer under a schoolmaster. 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

It is called a "slave woman" Gal 4:30 But what does the Scripture say? "Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman's son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman's son."

The law was designed to KILL you. 7:11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death.

The law is called dividing wall of hostility. (Eph2:14) For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace,
